The Importance of Rondos!

At Regents Park, one of our core training methods is the rondo.

This is a passing square, with 4 players on the outside of a square keeping possession away from one or two defenders in the middle who try to win the ball back.

As a club, we want to emphasise the importance of the skills you can develop during such practices, so if you get the chance to play this at home or with friends, it can really help you develop!

Firstly, this is a great way to perfect your passing and receiving skills whilst being under pressure.

Having a good first touch and accurate pass is a fundamental skill to progress as a footballer.

Secondly, it teaches the importance of getting into the right spaces by creating angles of support.

When learning the game, it can be common for players to stand still, or in positions where they are marked.

The rondo is a great opportunity to move into spaces that can help your teammates by offering them a passing option.

Lastly, this is a great way to build good communication habits.

If you’re in a good space, let your team mate know! This is quite common in sport, that players do the hard work by getting into the right places but don’t always communicate and show for the ball.

Can you incorporate these skills when you do rondo’s at Regents Park this week?

See you tomorrow for training!
