In football, one of the most important things is to be confident.

Without confidence, we won’t look to receive a pass, maybe we won’t take a shot when close to the goal, or we might not even be confident enough to want to play.

Being confident can transform your game, and the most confident players take risks in games.

What do we mean by risks though?

Sometimes in football we cannot always play a safe, simple pass. Some games are tight, or there could be a situation where there is 2 minutes left to play and you need a goal.

Football sometimes requires taking risks to receive a reward.

An example of this in football is a player who decides to dribble at opponents and then try to get a shot away.

Cristiano Ronaldo did this back in 2006 to win Man Utd the game in the 90th minute, you can watch it here:

Sometimes another risk, or example of being confident, is to shoot on goal in the dying seconds. Steven Gerrard did this in the FA Cup Final in 2006 to draw the game 3-3 and then win on penalties, you can watch it here:

Did it look as though it was a goal scoring chance for Ronaldo or Gerrard? Not necessarily, but with their confidence and risk-taking mentality, they decided to take a chance.

The mindset they have to take that chance lead to great success for their team.

Next time you are playing a game of football, what risks can you take?

Remember… sometimes some situations are too risky. Typically you wouldn’t start dribbling the ball around in your defensive penalty area.

It’s important to consider when a risk is worth taking.

So from an attacking point of view, what risks can you take in training this saturday to help your team win the game?

We look forward to seeing you at Regents Park this Saturday!
